The changes to the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) which took effect from 1 January 2012 make it easier for pet owners to travel abroad with their pets, while keeping the UK protected from rabies.
The changes have led to some concerns being expressed about the potential for an increased risk of introducing rabies to the UK. However, DEFRA states that detailed risk assessment shows the risk to remain very low.
