Background

Cats (Felis silvestris catus) are sociable pets known for their companionship and ability to hunt pests – they have been associated with people for 9,500 years! 90% of cats in the UK are cross-breeds.

Appearance

Cats differ in size and appearance and can weigh approximately 2.5 - 7kg in weight. The largest breed of cat is the Maine Coon, which can weigh over 11kg. Some breeds of cats have long coats, whilst others, such as the Sphynx, are hairless.

Behaviour

Cats are very sociable pets, but their personality and behaviour differs from breed to breed, so it’s worth doing your research when you’re thinking about buying a cat.

Lifespan

The lifespan of cats is usually 14 to 20 years.
