Hyperthyroidism
What is hyperthyroidism?
Hypothyroidism is a common hormonal condition affecting cats. It is a condition that can easily be missed and in some cases confirming the diagnosis can be difficult. Cats of all ages can be affected although hyperthyroidism commonly affects middle-aged or older cats.
Symptoms
Symptoms include weight loss and increased appetite for food. Cats may also vomit and suffer from diarrhoea and you may notice that your cat is hyperactive and restless.
What causes hyperthyroidism?
Hyperthyroidism occurs due to increased thyroid hormone circulating in the blood due to an overactive thyroid.
Treatment
If you think your cat has hyperthyroidism, contact your vet who will be able to advise on the appropriate investigation and treatment. Once a diagnosis has been confirmed, treatment can involve the daily administration of anti-thyroid medication. Surgal removal of the affected thyroid gland(s) can also take place, or radioactive iodine treatment in a specialist centre.
