Background
Degus (Octodon degus) (pronounced daygoos) are small caviomorph rodents that are native to Chile. They are often referred to as brush-tailed rats (although not closely related to the rat family).
Appearance
Degus weigh from 180 to 300g and are up to 25cm long (including their bushy tail). Their coat is tweed-brown with cream tummies and lighter circles around their eyes.
Behaviour
Degus are very social pets that relate well to humans. They are also diurnal, which means they are awake during the day. It’s advisable to do your research when you’re thinking about buying a degu.
Lifespan
The lifespan of a degu is up to 5 years, although some have been known to live up to 9 years.
