Hypothyroidism
What is hypothyroidism?
Hypothyroidism is a common hormonal condition affecting dogs. It is a condition that can easily be missed and in some cases confirming the diagnosis can be difficult. Dogs of all ages can be affected, although hypothyroidism commonly affects middle-aged or older dogs.
Symptoms
Symptoms include weight gain, hair loss and poor coat quality and a reluctance to exercise. Dogs may develop a tragic facial expression and be more prone to skin infections.
What causes hypothyroidism?
Hypothyroidism occurs due to a reduction of thyroid hormone circulating in the blood following either inflammation of the thyroid gland or wasting away of the gland.
Treatment
If you think your dog has hypothyroidism, contact your vet who will be able to advise on the appropriate investigation and treatment. Once a diagnosis has been confirmed, treatment generally involves the daily administration of a thyroid hormone supplement.
