Background
Ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) are close relatives of polecats believed to have been domesticated for at least 2,500 years! The name "ferret" is derived from the Latin furittus, meaning ‘little thief’, due to ferrets penchant for collecting and hiding small items.
Appearance
Ferrets weigh around 1kg and are 50cm long (including tail). They can have brown, black, white or mixed fur.
Behaviour
Ferrets sleep for 14-18 hours a day. They are crepuscular which means they are naturally active at dawn and dusk. Energetic and curious, they will actively seek out playtime with their owners. They have a strong nesting instinct and will often hide whatever they can get their paws on.
Lifespan
Ferrets have a normal lifespan of 7 to 10 years.
