QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

  • Why is the water in my tank cloudy?
If you have just filled the tank with water it will be the air bubbles in the water. This will settle down quickly. If the tank has been running for some time then it could be due to an algae bloom. Speak to your aquatic specialist or pet shop on how to control algae. It could of course be that uneaten fish food is dissolving in the water!
  • Why is my fish on its side or swimming sideways?
If your fish is on it’s side at the top of the tank then it is full of intestinal gas. Speak to your pet shop or aquatic specialist about their diet. If they are on the bottom of the tank then they are having swim bladder failure. The swim bladder fills and empties of gas as the fish move around the tank. To recover your fish will need clean water. Vacuum the gravel in the tank with specialist equipment and change part of the water regularly. Once again your pet shop or local aquatic supplier will be able to help you.
  • How many fish can live together happily?
It is not how many fish can live together but how many fish your tank has the capacity to hold. This will depend on the size and type of fish. Your local pet shop or aquatic supplier will be able to advise you on what your tank is suitable for. Overcrowding a fish tank leads to competition for food and poor water quality due to the waste being produced. You will also need to consider which breeds of fish can live together.
  • Why did my fish die suddenly without any sign of disease?
Firstly, it is important to check your water quality and temperature. Your pet shop or aquatic supplier will be able to advise you on how to do this. Check your fish very closely for signs of disease and watch your fish at feeding time. Do you have a fish that is bullying the others? Have you recently changed the water in the tank and did you make sure that it was the right temperature and was treated for chlorine? These can both cause high levels of stress and can be fatal.
