Background

Gerbils (Gerbillinae) are rodents and are indiginous to Africa, India and Asia. There are 110 species and the Mongolian gerbil is the breed most commonly kept as a pet.

Appearance

Gerbils are usually 15cm to 30cm long

(including their tail). The Mongolian gerbil has 20 different coat colours.

Behaviour

Gerbils are very popular pets as they are sociable, placid and rarely bite. They are also diurnal, which means they are awake during the day.

Lifespan

The lifespan of a gerbil is usually 2 to 4 years.
