What is Rabbit Awareness Week?
This year, the theme is Hop to Hay and the week aims to help educate and inform rabbit owners (and would-be rabbit owners) on how their pet can enjoy a suitable and balanced diet, to keep him or her happy and healthy all year round. As Rabbit Welfare explain, “Rabbits are one of the most misunderstood pets in the UK and not enough rabbit owners understand the importance of fibre in a rabbit’s diet and the differences between feeding hay and bedding hay”. The week’s activities will help reinforce the message that alongside bedding hay, which should be used for sleeping, rabbits also have access to good quality feeding hay. Access to this type of hay is not just tastier but will also help promote good digestive and dental health and, as Rabbit Welfare put it, will help more rabbits live healthier, happier lives!
What’s been happening during the week?
Events are taking place throughout June up and down the country involving vets, pet shops, rescue centres, schools and individuals. For example, many vets across the UK are offering free health checks for rabbits as well as advice and information for owners. There are also a myriad of resources which have been specially-developed for schools to help get them involved in the week, ranging from teachers’ information sheets, lesson plans, rabbit numeracy and literary worksheets and posters. Retailers are be getting in on the act by displaying special #RAW2017 bunting and posters along with information and offers in-store. More than 300 events are currently planned and you can find your nearest here.
What else can I do to support the week?
As well as events up and down the country and resources available from the Rabbit Awareness Week site, you can get involved by simply telling friends, family and other rabbit owners about the week and the campaign. Social media users can join the conversation online with the hashtags #RAW2017 and #HoptoHay or you can simply download and print a letter to send to a friend or family member to tell them all about it and help spread the word: http://www.rabbitawarenessweek.co.uk/tell-a-friend/.
